Back in the skies, Ceres finally sought help from Zeus and she begged him to get Porsepina out from Hades. Yet sadly, Zeus said there was nothing he could do, since Porsepina had already eaten four promegranate seeds. Finally they came to a consensus. And for this, he said, Porsepina is to stay with Pluto in the Hades for four months of the year. As for the rest of the year, they may be reunited.

For this reason came the story of the four seasons. In springtime, ceres received her daughter and the earth rejoiced in unison. The flowers bloomed a resplendent colour and plants grew during summer, the crops flourished in abundance. For when autumn came, Ceres painted the earth in shades of orange and brown as a gift to Porsepina before she left for the underworld. And finally, when the cold gusts of winter arrived, Ceres was too heartbroken. All plants and crops on earth withered in sadness. Soon, what was left lying on earth were barren grounds in snow.
